photographic and sound installation
90x60cm / each
2011
This installation consists of a series of developed digital images and two sets of pre-recorded vocal narrations.
These images are comprised of records from my personal participation in tribal life, including those of people, landscape, rituals, hunting, fishing, environment, festivals, recreation etc. Each shot was an event which took place at a different time and place. They record the fleeting moment but capture only a fragment of reality, reflecting how each locale may allow the possibility of different interpretations. The vocals in the earphones provide two viewpoints on each site: one from my own perception at the instant of taking each shot, and the other being explanations or opinions made by an aboriginal friend. Two distinct voices, delivered through distinct tones, respectively making their own interpretations on the same topic, illustrate how different viewpoints do not necessarily hold opposing views and are all but just means to understand the way things are.
During the exhibition, the audience is free to view the images whilst listening to the narrations through headphones. The pre-recorded narrations are played randomly, causing a formation of various audio-visual combinations due to the disparate ways the images are being read. Through permutation of sound and images, the everyday life and situation of the aboriginals living in the Eastern coast of Hualien will automatically interweave into a private perception known solely to the beholder.
